With its versatility and dynamics, the BMW X5 xDrive40e meets all expectations. The “eDrive” lettering at the c-pillars is a subtle optical difference to the BMW X5. What really sets it apart is the range in the purely electric mode. It can drive approximately 30 kilometres locally emission-free and with zero fuel consumption. The high-voltage battery is stored safely beneath the luggage compartment floor, which, with a generous volume of 1,720 litres, is ideal for bulky luggage items. In short, a pioneering and unrivalled vehicle concept.
INDIVIDUAL DRIVING CHARACTERISTICS.
As a plug-in hybrid, the BMW X5 xDrive40e has various different drive modes that allow the driver to significantly influence the actual energy consumption. This depends on both the driving mode selected and the driver’s personal behaviour.
When the battery is fully charged, you can drive for up to 31 kilometres without using a single drop of fuel. In the AUTO eDrive mode, the optimal combination of electric motor and combustion engine enables the focus to be placed on top-quality efficiency.
Urban driving
When driving in the city, the BMW X5 xDrive40e exploits the strengths of the electric drive system to the full. With a fully charged battery, short distances (up to 31 km) can be covered with no local emissions – through the city, without using one drop of petrol.
Day-to-day driving
On your daily commute, the interplay between both drive systems in the plug-in hybrid also comes to the fore. In the AUTO eDrive mode, the intelligent combination of combustion engine and electric motor guarantees considerably lower consumption than that of petrol and diesel vehicles in this class. INTELLIGENT ENERGY MANAGEMENT.
Intelligent energy management is one of the main pillars of the BMW eDrive concept. This system coordinates the interaction of all drive components in order to combine the best possible efficiency with great driving dynamics.
Intelligent energy management optimises the hybrid drive's power-efficiency factor by predictively choosing the appropriate drive. For example, available navigation data is used to identify in advance the sections of the route and driving situations that are best suited for the electric motor or for charging the high-voltage battery.
In situations in which the combustion engine would have a low power-efficiency factor, the system shifts up to a higher load range with a better power-efficiency factor. That means that the combustion engine produces additional power. This power is used to create electricity for the battery via the electric motor/generator, which can later be used for electric driving or efficiently supporting the combustion engine. It also controls the electric motor/generator, so that kinetic energy is transformed into electrical energy during coasting and when braking. In combination with ECO PRO mode, intelligent energy management adapts all vehicle systems, including all auxiliary components and comfort functions, to be fuel-consumption conscious and highly efficient.
The eDrive button allows the driver to choose between three eDrive modes: the standard AUTO eDRIVE mode, the purely electric MAX eDRIVE mode and the SAVE BATTERY mode, which maintains the charging status at a constant level.
AUTO eDRIVE mode
In the AUTO eDRIVE mode, the intelligent BMW EfficientDynamics system determines the most efficient combination of electric motor and combustion engine – depending on the driving speed and the battery charging status. This mode is divided into two phases: If the battery charging status is between 12% and 100%, you can drive at up to 70 km/h – free of local emissions and without using any fuel. At higher speeds or with more demanding requirements, the petrol engine switches on automatically. If the battery charging status drops below 12%, the BMW X5 xDrive40e can be driven in the purely electric mode and with moderate acceleration at speeds of up to 55 km/h.
MAX eDRIVE mode
Electric driving fun to the max: In the MAX eDRIVE mode, you can enjoy purely electric driving at speeds of up to 120 km/h. At higher speeds or when the acceleration potential has been exhausted, the combustion engine switches on automatically.
SAVE BATTERY mode
When the battery charging status is low, the SAVE BATTERY mode enables the battery to be charged by the combustion engine or allows the charging status to be maintained. In this way, the driver can save the battery capacity for purely electric driving later.

Charging at home
The vehicle can be conveniently charged at home at a conventional household 230 volt power socket, and has a "full tank" after less than four hours. The car's charging port is located behind a flap on the front left side panel. All that is needed for charging is the specially designed cable, which can be stored safely and compactly under the luggage compartment floor. A special seal protects the charging port and plug from the elements. LED light rings on the charging port make the charging status visually clear.
Instead of a normal power socket, a BMW i Wallbox can also be mounted as a charging station. It offers increased charging power, significantly shortening charging time. A display in the specifically tailored instrument cluster informs the driver about the high-voltage battery's current level of charge. Depending on various factors, for example the strength of the charge at the power source, devices actively consuming electricity in the car during the charging process and the use of a Wallbox, it takes less than three hours for an empty high-voltage battery to recharge completely. During external charging, the passenger area can be cooled without affecting the charging status of the high-voltage battery.
Charging on the go
Along with conventional household electrical sockets, the vehicle can be charged easily and conveniently on the go at public charging stations. That way, after going shopping, the driver can continue their journey "with a full tank" but free of emissions. All that's needed for charging is the included cable, which can be stored safely and compactly under the luggage compartment floor. LED light rings on the charging port make the charging status visually clear. The optional navigation system and the My BMW Remote app for plug-in hybrids give the driver information about the location and availability of suitable charging stations.
CONNECTIVITY.
Always connected up to your BMW: Via smartphone (iOS or Android), not only Remote Services such as remote locking are available, but also hybrid-specific functions. This ensures that you always have an overview of the consumption and efficiency values of your BMW X5 xDrive40e. BMW Services for every situation, which can be used inside the vehicle – and outside.
My BMW Remote for plug-in hybrids
The My BMW Remote App for plug-in hybrids for iOS and Android displays detailed information about the vehicle's current status, such as its location, battery level and remaining range.
The charging procedure can be controlled remotely via the week-to-view timer, and the vehicle's temperature remotely adjusted in good time ready for the next journey. Destinations, points of interest and the location of charging stations can be easily sent from the application directly to the vehicle.
The My BMW Remote App for plug-in hybrids also measures the efficiency of every trip and can provide suggestions on how to drive the vehicle more efficiently and extend its range. The efficiency value of each journey can also be anonymously shared with drivers and compared.
Pre-conditioning
Half an hour before the planned departure, cooling and ventilation to the selected temperature is implemented by an intelligent control system. The system is operated by the iDrive Controller inside the car, or conveniently with a smartphone using the My BMW Remote App for plug-in hybrids.
Provided that the high-voltage battery has a sufficient charge, the stationary heating and cooling functions regardless of whether the vehicle is being externally charged or not.
